Never fall in love with your employer. Any respectable governess knew the cardinal rule. Christine Aubrey prided herself on her devotion to her charges, never suspecting that one day a former pupil would tempt her to break every rule in the book.
EXERPT:
Only one woman had ever engendered tender feelings of affection.
Now that Teddy finally had the chance to tell her, he did not know how. His quiet nature had always served him in the past, but today it hindered him, barred him from the thing he wanted most.
"If Astrophill and Stella is not to your taste, perhaps you would enjoy a verse from Lord Byron." He lowered his voice. "There be none of Beauty’s daughters with a magic like thee; and like music on the waters is thy sweet voice to me."
For a moment, Christine’s gaze met his and held. "You never cease to surprise me, Teddy."
She’d said it. Teddy. He would’ve been happy with Theodore. His name lingered in the air, and he savored it like a fine vintage of port.
Her eyes widened in horror, and she covered her lips. "I am sorry, Mr. Blake. Forgive me for my slip in proper manners."
She closed the red leather-bound book and set it on the cushion beside her. From the way she gripped the wood back of the chaise, he knew she was alarmed, probably intent on leaving. If he didn’t stop her—
Teddy stepped in front of her and picked up the book. "I know my recitations are not as practiced or eloquent as my brothers’ would be. If you should like to read in quiet contemplation, I can ring for my luncheon and let you choose a book to your liking. "
Christine’s cheeks turned pink again. "It is not that, sir. It is…I mean…I—" She paused, taking a deep breath. "I have embarrassed myself and I think it is best that I return to check on the children."
"When did Mr. Howell arrive to see the children?"
She glanced at the grandfather clock against the wall. "I suspect it was around one o’clock."
"You have another hour," he said. . "Surely you can stay a few minutes longer."
"I—I"
"I am asking you to stay." He put the volume back into her hands. As he did so, his fingers brushed hers and he wished he could allow them to linger.
When she opened her mouth to speak, he did not let her. If she wanted another excuse to leave, he would not give her the chance.
