Something to Lose by Tamra Lassiter
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Something to Lose by Tamara Lassister is a self-published/independent publication set for a May 2014 release. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
When Camden discovers her boyfriend making out passionately with another woman she stomps out of the house and never looks back. She's pissed and hurt and so she does that thing women do in those circumstances. She grabs a bottle of wine, a package of cookie dough and heads for a nice hot bubble bath. When she drops the wine bottle and it makes a horrible crashing noise, she screams because she is startled. But, when her bathroom door comes crashing open and a man she has never seen before is standing in her bathroom, startled doesn't begin to cover it.
Seth is a former FBI agent literally obsessed with a mob family he blames for his grandfather's death. Cam's boyfriend, Billy, has connections to this crime family which was why he was keeping tabs on her. When he realizes she is alone, naked and in no danger at all+, he tells her who he is and sort of forgets to mention the "former" part of being an FBI agent.
When members of the crime family begin snooping around Cam and her friend Dave gets involved, Seth takes it upon himself to see to it that Cam is safe. When Cam finds out the girl her former boyfriend was locking lips with has the nick name of "Angel of Death, she is worried about Billy even if they have broken up. Was Billy really involved with the mob? Is he is alive or dead? Can she trust Seth or is he hiding something from her? While these questions are being explored, the one thing everyone knows for sure is that Cam is a target.
This romantic suspense novel explores the dark side of law enforcement, the toll obsessions will take on a person from every angle, the importance of family and honesty, and knowing when to put the past in perspective and move on.
Seth is a good guy, but walks around with blinders on. He has investigated this particular crime family for years, either in a legitimate law enforcement capacity or on his own. This is the only thing he has in his life, except his grandmother. Will he be able to accept that there are some things he will never be able to change and begin to look forward to a brighter future... possibly with Cam?
Cam is a girl we can all relate to in many ways. She has a habit of getting involved with the wrong guys and is just a little bit too trusting. I did get frustrated with her when she kept on insisting Billy couldn't possibly be involved in organized crime when all the evidence showed he was. I did like that she didn't wish him any ill will despite the circumstances, she hoped he was OK. Cam is a little ditzy but I couldn't help but like her. But, after all her bad luck will she be able to ever trust Seth enough to start a new life with him?
This is a pleasant enough read, with light romance and a good deal of action. There were a few plot twist and I was interested enough to keep turning pages. There isn't anything is this one that stands out enough to put it into the four star level, but, all in all it's a good effort and I think this author shows potential. I give this one a C+ or 3 stars.
