THE GOVERNESS AFFAIR

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is a novella by Courtney Milan and a prelude to her new series- The Brothers Sinister. Serena is fired from her job as governess. She doesn't take this lying down. She begins a protest by showing up at the Duke's residence each morning and camping out. It is Hugo Marshall's job to fix the problem. He has to get rid of her.<br />When Hugo's initial attempts fail, he begins to find himself fascinated by Serena. Serena has a feeling of safety when Hugo is around. Something tells her he wouldn't hurt her. But, Hugo insist he is not a good man. Hugo's childhood memories of his father have left him determined to become rich. This means he has to continue to ally himself with the Duke, who is a terrible person. But, when Serena enters the picture and he learns more and more about her personally and the dire situation she is in, he has to take drastic steps to insure they both get what they want. But, is the solution he proposes enough? Can he continue to ignore his feelings for Serena in his all consuming pursuit of wealth? This is a great start to this new series. In just this short story, there is depth, humor, romance, and sensuality that left me wanting more. Overall an A.
